San Severo, Italy 1943

March 29, 1943, The 8th airforce launched a bombing campaign against key oil refineries in axis occupied countries, the only problem was that axis fighter aircraft continually raided allied bombing routes. To solve this problem the allies held a meeting to discuss the plans for a new fighter that could escort bombers all the way to Berlin, Germany. They decided on a prototype that Britain had ordered to defend England better from axis bomber raid, the aircraft was was called the mustang by the british. In the later of the year North American aviation bilt the first prototype in only 153 days, they cristened it the P-51A Mustang. In later years North American built more effiecient models of the P-51, these were the P-51B, the P-51C, the most mass produced version P-51D, and also other models like the H, J and, K. The P-51 Mustang helped change the course of WWII, here is some educational referance to the greatest aircraft of WWII.
